2021-2022 Boys Golf Preview
Jack Jassy
The 2021-22 boys golf season is here and Garfield brings some new faces to a veteran-led team. Seniors Jack Theiss, Jack Jassy, and Sam Lopez lead the team with much experience playing in matches. Sophomores Jack Sundberg and Jackson Schlemmer return to the team with a year under their belt and freshmen James Lynch, Jake Rogers, and Cole Yagi will debut their high school golf career this season. The Bulldogs also added two new seniors in Mason Albert and Coleman Standifer who will get early opportunities to showcase their ability.
In the 2020-21 golf season, Garfield went 4-1-1 in match play with their sole loss of the season coming against O’Dea. The team will lose three key seniors to last year’s team in Griffin Thoreson, Ian Wiltamuth, and Hiroshi Koda. Garfield hopes that their new additions will help mitigate the loss of their seniors.
The 2021-22 season will begin with an exhibition matchup against West Seattle. Last year, the Bulldogs tied West Seattle 99-99, so a rematch will give Garfield a sense of where they stand in the Metro League. Later in the season, Garfield will face perennial upper tier teams such as Ballard and O’Dea and teams with recent success like Lincoln. Although these matchups will bring a big challenge for Garfield, many of these opponents are going through major changes. Both Ballard and Lincoln have coaching changes and O’Dea will lose their top 2 scorers from last year. The Bulldogs have the tools to be successful and senior Jack Theiss expects “Garfield golf to be a much improved program this year and we could very well be one of the best in the league.”
